After the Underworld Amusements edition of The Unique and Its Property was attacked and the translator and publisher receiving death threats and much lighter threats from that same anarchist milieu, the book was taken out of circulation, with copies fetching high-dollars on the secondary market. The book was later released in a new, and much pinker, edition by Little Black Cart. While LBC does most of their printing and binding in-house, they went big with a proper professional print run and have been selling it down since its 2018 release.

Leading up to and past the public announcement, Underworld Amusements, a long time supporter of LBC, arranged to make one last big order of books, including nearly EVERY REMAINING COPY of The Unique and Its Property, about a thousand total. After many many months we have just now taken possession of many dozens of boxes of books and pamphlets, and will be inventorying them and adding them to the website.

Further, Underworld Amusements and the Union of Egoists project will be working on NEW EDITIONS of OUR favorite LBC/ARDENT PRESS titles, to be released as we sell out of the on-hand LBC editions.

What a blight it is on life, to be sure, that honest speech is almost non-existent. Lo and behold, all are alike: the secret sin against the spirit of peace is universal, and can be proclaimed from the housetops.
The “poor” man is the one who lacks the power to get what he wants. If he had had the “might,” the “competence” to cover the wide expanse of these “rights,” he would not be in the position of a beggar asking for the favour of a job from a master: he would have set about being his own master: the one thing which to this day the ordinary wage earner steadily refuses to be. “Reformers” have tried to get a comprehensive view of the “world’s work”—which does not exist save in their own imagination—and they have come to neglect and hold lightly work viewed from its only real aspect—the personal satisfying of needs and wants as they rise up spontaneously from each varying individual. Social rebels will get no way until they acquiesce willingly in men and women being what they are: accept their oddities and wayward differences and then make the best and most of them to serve their individual ends.

This issue of Der Geist includes rare reprints of egoist history. These include blow-by-blow accounts of Dora Marsden in her street-fighting phase, lost transcriptions of J. William Lloyd saved from the darkness by individualist feminist Wendy McElroy, the philosophical and physical wanderings of the laughing philosopher Malfew Seklew, and more. This issue of Der Geist also includes original inquiries into egoist history. These include a history of the Radical Book Shop of Chicago, and the heretofore undocumented bands of iron that link the Industrial Workers of the World (the “Wobblys”) and Ragnar Redbeard’s book Might is Right.

Today, as a thank you to our readers we are making available a rare item of interest to the history of Egoism. For those new to the project, the entire site if stilled with fascinating detail, but the page that features all the subjects to blog posts, sorted by year, is high recommended. We post at least once a week, every week.

Attached is a PDF of John Henry Mackay–The Unique, by K.H.Z. Solneman. Solneman was the pseudonym of the late Kurt Zube, and was published in 1978. While Mackay’s own autobiography has since been released, and subsequently gone out of print, we’re pleased to share this sketch with you. Mackay was a complicated man, but had it not been for him, undoubtedly none of us would probably know the name Stirner.

The Stand Alone journal is going strong and the next installment will be announced within a few days. Unfortrunately we haven’t kept up with the actual journal page here on UoE! We will have yet another significant year of releases, including a number of books.

Likewise, Der Geist issue number three is in the works and will be yet another significant compendium of new and historical materials. Every issue we learn more about our subject and about our workflow.

Also likewise, the second issue of The New En Marge is already in progress! It will be released in the Fall, but will contain a number of previously unseen items from the Sidney E. Parker Archives.

“EGOISTS SHOULD READ” judged the Egoist journal The Eagle and The Serpent (1898) in the promotion of For Love and Money by Leighton Pagan.  Underworld Amusements has now printed this rare tract for the second installment of the Stand Alone (2016) journal, in a limited edition with a new introduction by Trevor Blake and end notes! Unavailable anywhere online, and certainly the only new edition since it was originally published by Wilson and Macmillan of London in 1898.

Leighton Pagan was the pseudonym of John Badcock Jr., more widely known for his work Slaves to Duty and contributions to Benjamin Tucker’s Liberty (1881) journal. Pagan was a public speaker and author with an egoist perspective on sex and relations. The topics he addressed and the groups he spoke to show a singular dedication to the individual’s wants (and wantonness) as supreme over society.

For Love and Money is a pamphlet collecting two published speeches by this strident individualist.

A review in the contemporary British journal The Adult said:

“Any who draw their portraits of free lovers from Artemus Ward’s delightful absurdities will regard the distinction of a free lover with a sense of humour as sufficiently unique, but in adding to this gift of writing wittily and luminously on the currency question, Mr. Pagan attains to the miraculous.”

We see there a now wholly obscure reference to Abraham Lincoln’s favorite author (real name Charles F. Browne), who published a story Artemus Ward Among the Free Lovers in 1858.

The two sections of For Love and Money were advertised as follows:

1.— The Judgment of Paris—up to date, a lecture given before the Legitimation League, dealing in the most unconventional way with the vital questions of marriage and free love.
2.—The Money Famine, a reprint of an interesting article on the money question from the Free Review.
