After the Underworld Amusements edition of The Unique and Its Property was attacked and the translator and publisher receiving death threats and much lighter threats from that same anarchist milieu, the book was taken out of circulation, with copies fetching high-dollars on the secondary market. The book was later released in a new, and much pinker, edition by Little Black Cart. While LBC does most of their printing and binding in-house, they went big with a proper professional print run and have been selling it down since its 2018 release.

Leading up to and past the public announcement, Underworld Amusements, a long time supporter of LBC, arranged to make one last big order of books, including nearly EVERY REMAINING COPY of The Unique and Its Property, about a thousand total. After many many months we have just now taken possession of many dozens of boxes of books and pamphlets, and will be inventorying them and adding them to the website.

Further, Underworld Amusements and the Union of Egoists project will be working on NEW EDITIONS of OUR favorite LBC/ARDENT PRESS titles, to be released as we sell out of the on-hand LBC editions.

The project cycles through focus, but always produces new work, both online and in print. Today, as a thank you to our readers we are making available a rare item of interest to the history of Egoism. For those new to the project, the entire site if stilled with fascinating detail, but the page that features all the subjects to blog posts, sorted by year, is high recommended. We post at least once a week, every week.

Attached is a PDF of John Henry Mackay–The Unique, by K.H.Z. Solneman. Solneman was the pseudonym of the late Kurt Zube, and was published in 1978. While Mackay’s own autobiography has since been released, and subsequently gone out of print, we’re pleased to share this sketch with you. Mackay was a complicated man, but had it not been for him, undoubtedly none of us would probably know the name Stirner.

The Stand Alone journal is going strong and the next installment will be announced within a few days. Unfortrunately we haven’t kept up with the actual journal page here on UoE! We will have yet another significant year of releases, including a number of books.

Likewise, Der Geist issue number three is in the works and will be yet another significant compendium of new and historical materials. Every issue we learn more about our subject and about our workflow.

Also likewise, the second issue of The New En Marge is already in progress! It will be released in the Fall, but will contain a number of previously unseen items from the Sidney E. Parker Archives.

We are very appreciative of those supporting our work on Patreon. It is because of Patrons that we spent the money on the scanner used to produce the PDF being shared here. It will be the first of many items scanned and provided for free for research or pleasurable curiosity.

Laurance Labadie and His Critics

Laurance Labadie, the last of the individualist anarchists, heir of Warren, Spooner and Tucker has in recent months been dismissed as a veritable fossil by a young Wobbly (who also feels that individualist anarchism is hopelessly bourgeois), characterized by a disciple of Ludwig VonMises as being “incapable of reasoned thought,” denounced as a “cretin” by another young disciple of “Austrian” economics, and attacked for allegedly being “doctrinaire” by a Gandhi disciple.

That these attacks have all been devious on the one hand and namby-pamby and incredibly naive on the other is a measure of the general decay of native American libertarian-radicalism in the last twenty or thirty years. Mr. Labadie is the first to admit that he is a “cantankerous old man” but he would dearly love to see his vilifiers come out with some of that good old “reasoned thought!” It seems it is terribly old-fashioned to declare for a just and equitable program for land and money nowadays. The socialist (& Gandhian) critics of Labadie would like to do away with the awful (money) altogether—the VonMisians and Objectivists want to hold on to all that “time preference” interest. Does our present economic system cause war? Heaven forbid!

That Mr. Labadie’s work will survive his critics this writer has no doubt. Tucked away in obscure journals, large reams of stuff virtually unread and unpublished are the making of a mountain of a book demolishing all comers be they socialists, communists, phony free enterprisers and all the other fakirs who claim to speak for “humanity.”

For over forty years Labadie has done battle with socialists, communist anarchists, single taxers, equitists, Gesellites, Social Creditors and invariably come out the victor. However be it noted that he has rarely received thanks for his efforts. He has in fact usually been spat upon and dismissed as a killjoy and crank.

Although he envisages a world of economic freedom Laurance Labadie is no system-maker. He believes that real freedom of competition will show soon enough what’s what. He is no Utopian either seeing genuine freedom as a goal rather than a place.

Son of Jo Labadie of the famed Labadie Collection, Laurance Labadie has far outdistanced his father as a thinker and polemicist. Laurence Labadie has had the good luck to have been in contact most of his life with all the best that has been written by the libertarian-radical tradition, a tradition that has become extinct as the dodo, a tradition that is now being plagiarized by spokesmen of the status quo who claim to be libertarians—but whose concept of liberty is actually liberty-by-permission which enables them to hold on to their ill-gotten gains.

Labadie is a prophet though no Messiah and the prognosis for prophets in any time or place has not been very good. However if we ever survive this Orwellian world I think the ideas of the “cranks” will bear fruit.

The first header we designed listed the core “members” of this Union:

Trevor was the man for Marsden and Seklew, Kevin championed DeCasseres and Redbeard, and Stirner was obviously patient zero. Trevor is a very intelligent, considered and funny autodidact. He is NOT a psychic:

And within 30 minutes we had UnionOfEgoists.com registered, and within an hour we had the name for the journal that quote would be published in. I’m not sure how long it was before we informally limited the scope of our project to the 100 years between the (stated) release of Stirner’s opus and the death of Benjamin DeCasseres, but it has been a general rule we’ve been free to violate at will and with malice. Trevor was more interested in keeping to that century than Kevin, but both agreed it was good for a number of reasons, mainly because the project could become too diluted and fragmented without some artificial restriction applied.

The idea was to highlight those who were in our target century, but still give credit to those after that time who substantially added to our understanding of the individuals from that period. Kevin wanted to conceptually divide our work between Historical Egoists and Egoist Historians. While that’s a pretty fun way to describe the two camps, he wanted a single word for each that clearly differentiated the two without needing to know jargon. While we sometimes refer to them as “members of the Union” this is ironic, being they are dead, and cannot choose to be part of any union or choose to leave it. So while we may still use the phrase in a casual sense, we wanted our “official” terminology to be as self-evident as we could muster.

We nixed “members”, “egoists”, “uniques” and “egos.” All these seemed to be too camp or too jargon. Eventually we settled on author for Historical Egoists and archivist for Egoist Historians. After all, both Trevor Blake and Sidney E. Parker have self-identified as egoists, as far as UnionOfEgoists.com is concerned, but here we focus on their role as historians of egoism. We will say without a doubt, if Sid had not been publishing his journals, some names would have been lost. The important modern book that has introduced egoism and individualist thought to a number of modern readers, Enemies of Society: An Anthology of Individualist & Egoist Thought (2011, Ardent Press), was SIGNIFICANTLY culled from the pages of Parker’s journals. Kevin obtained a copy of Enemies of Society shortly before printing (but after the book was mostly ready) A Bible Not Borrowed from the Neighbors: Essays and Aphorisms on Egoism (2012, Underworld Amusements). Because there were two essays from Enemies of Society included in A Bible Not Borrowed, Kevin included a note on the copyright page describing the unintended duplication, but that he felt they were short enough and strong enough to be included in both. Kevin will also say here that HIS book was  SIGNIFICANTLY culled from the pages of Barnhill’s The Eagle and The Serpent (1898)!

It’s also important for us to maintain a website and journal that is descriptive of what the authors did and said, rather than prescriptive of what you should think or do (with one exception: buy our books). While the authors included may prescribe this or that, the “editorial voice” should not. Referring to the figures that will populate this site as “egoists” may seem like an apparent and non-controversial thing to do, when dealing with documenting something people feel strongly about, anything can be controversial. So, while we build the site we make decisions what to include and what not to, and you’re free to enjoy or disregard.

The most obvious “victim” of our change is our own Trevor Blake. He was listed aside Seklew and Marsden and Stirner, etc. And then Kevin wanted to add Benjamin R. Tucker and John Basil Barnhill and Steven Byington and there was just not enough room across the top of the page for all those names, and it was just cluttered.  For those keeping score at home, the players may have new team jackets but nobody has been cut.

Between 1974 and 2012 John Zube of Australia committed a half million pages  to microfiche. Currently there is no copy of this irreplaceable archive on the American continents or Europe! I have arranged to purchase an entire set of the microfiche, and the archival materials to properly store them for only $2,000.

If you’d paid attention to the site you’ll have noticed a great deal of material has been pulled from the Libertarian Microfiche Project that was run by John Zube from 1978 to around 2012. Over the course of time Mr. Zube committed about 500,000 pages of libertarian, anarchist, free market and other related material to microfiche in a series he called Peace Plans.

Between my co-founder Trevor Blake, our good friend Dustin and myself we are ready to match donations dollar for dollar to go toward purchasing an entire set of microfiche and archival sleeves and archival storage boxes.

We need a total of  $2,000 to purchase the fiche and the archival supplies to properly store them. Beginning in August of 2016, all money donated to the UoE project will go just to the Libertarian Microfiche Publishing Peace Plans acquisition until it and the archival materials are all together in the Union of Egoists archive. The current total is displayed in ye cliche thermometer on the sidebar.

There is also a transitionary stage where I’ve put information is online, but in an ugly way, just to get it there. I had, at one point, a disclaimer that the website was “under construction”, but my wise co-editor Trevor Blake suggested “everyone should understand that the internet is a work in progress”.

This transitional design is currently evident on The Storm! (1976) page, where I’ve just published two PDFs. The listing for the first two individual issues are in our “final style”, but the rest of the page is a bit of a wreck. Slowly but surely it is all being fixed and updated.

The strange thing here is the actual copy is dated 1967, but Bernd Laska’s original bibliography shows it as being published in 1968. Because the issue before it is still on microfiche, I can’t confirm what is the right year.
