Der Geist, (Trevor Blake, editor; Kevin I. Slaughter, co-editor) is an English-language journal for an international audience, publishing original scholarship on the philosophy of egoism. The “best version” depends on a few things. Some people don’t like the Byington translation first issued under the title The Ego and His Own. I’ve seen some people say some pretty ill-informed things about it, but Byington’s work was more than competent and I don’t think anyone reading it would be led astray. That being said, Wolfi Landstreicher’s more recent translation, under the more literal title The Unique and Its Property, is excellent. He does make some distinctions that Byington didn’t.
If you were just wanting an English version to understand, I think either translation will serve you well.
If you are looking for an annotated edition, then the Cambridge edition of the Byington translation is, without question, the most scholarly.
If you are looking for a well produced, inexpensive edition, Verso Books nicely retypset and redesigned the Libertarian Book Club edition that was based on Byington and edited by James J. Martin. It is around $14: https://amzn.to/3AbCDJX
If Wolfi’s work is what you want, the in-print edition is available from Little Black Cart: https://littleblackcart.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=672 . The LBC edition is based on the out-of-print Underworld Amusements first edition. They redesigned it, added an index but deleted a footnote (for reasons unknown to me).
It is difficult to recommend any of the other in-print editions published in the last few years. There is a ton of garbage flooding the online market. They’re mostly ugly and ineptly put together.

It was on ebay I came across the small anarchist project LCU Distro and specifically their book SAUERKRAUT for the EGO: Stirner’s Critics and Other Egoist Essays. LCU Distro focuses on anarchism, communism and LGBT interests, and their wares are available from their blog, ebay and facebook.

LCU appears to be printing and binding all “in-house” and while it’s apparent the publisher is still learning their craft, I give them credit for their effort and, at $5 shipped, a reasonable person can hardly complain that their when their book is clearly a DIY labor of love. While I’m not sure if it is an intentional design decision, the type on the spine reads bottom to top, the direction found on the spines of German books…. thematically appropriate, given the title! I was quite surprised at the typesetting, it was done better than many small anarchist presses, with properly running folio, nice looking footnotes and it has decent margins.

As for the content, the book is a compilation of one historical and then mostly modern work reflecting an egoist worldview with heavy emphasis on those who like to mix communism with egoism. While all of the works are online (and source cited in the book!), buying the book allows the editor to convey their own cause, and I can take what I like from it and disregard what I do not like. In fact, one can just put out their OWN compilation, as I did in 2012. Because the gathered material is mostly online, and most of it is outside the century that UoE focuses on (1845-1945), I will not further dwell on the content itself. I will say that if the themes appeal to you, and you don’t have a copy of Stirner’s Critics, picking up a copy of SAUERKRAUT for the EGO: Stirner’s Critics and Other Egoist Essays for a mere $5 seems like an easy decision.

Max Stirner was branded the Devil’s advocate in 1845 because the challenge to the powers-that-be was so great. His book was immediately banned by governments, became anathema among the churches and not even the liberals of his day felt safe.

His book The Unique and Its Property was condemned as shaking the “cornerstones of all moral and social life”. And because of that it was a true sensation on its initial release in 1844 (coincidentally, the year of Nietzsche’s birth). It brought to the world a radical view: egoism, the notion that the individual is the measure of all things.
 
Today, more than 170 years later, marks the release of a new English translation that truly restores the authors complete vitriolic and devastating challenge to the systems that are burdening bodies of men, and the shibboleths that haunt their minds.

Where we aren’t hosting full archives, we at least would like to have a basic write-up and possibly a listing of the contents and contributors of the issues. UoE is missing the PDF of issue 24 of Non Serviam, contact us if you have a copy. One thing we will try to do is include the date of the first issue when we mention the title of a journal. While it may not be confusing to just refer to Modern Slavery without putting (2012) behind it, our study has uncovered THREE different journals titled The Egoist.

We have also begun integrating i-studies.com materials into other areas of the website, such as the Stirner images page.

All the while we still have work to clean up various pages and get some basic information. We have created a Social/Web page for some select links (though I’d like to use a different term than “social”, it’s the common way to refer to services like Facebook).
